Shock Fluid Calculator
Calculate shock fluid doses for emergency treatment of hypovolemic shock in dogs and cats.
Emergency Use Only
This calculator is for emergency situations only. Always monitor patient response closely during shock fluid administration and adjust therapy accordingly.
Shock Fluid Guidelines
Shock Dose Guidelines:
- Dogs: 80-90 ml/kg
- Cats: 40-60 ml/kg (use lower doses in cats with cardiac disease)
- Administer in ¼ increments (over 15-20 minutes each) with reassessment between doses
Clinical Signs of Shock:
- Tachycardia
- Weak pulses
- Prolonged capillary refill time (CRT)
- Pale or gray mucous membranes
- Mental depression
- Hypothermia or hyperthermia
- Hypotension
Fluid Types for Shock:
- Isotonic crystalloids (e.g., Lactated Ringer's Solution, 0.9% NaCl)
- Hypertonic saline (7.5%) at 4-5 ml/kg for dogs, 2-4 ml/kg for cats
- Colloids (e.g., hydroxyethyl starch) at 10-20 ml/kg for dogs, 5-10 ml/kg for cats
Monitoring:
- Heart rate and rhythm
- Respiratory rate and effort
- Blood pressure
- Mucous membrane color and CRT
- Mental status
- Body temperature
- Urine output (goal: >1-2 ml/kg/hr)
