Chocolate Toxicity Calculator
Calculate the toxicity risk when dogs or cats consume chocolate. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which can be toxic to pets. The toxicity depends on the type of chocolate, amount consumed, and the pet's weight.
Emergency Situation?
If your pet has consumed chocolate and is showing symptoms, contact your veterinarian or animal poison control immediately: ASPCA Animal Poison Control: (888) 426-4435

Chocolate Toxicity Information
Toxic Compounds in Chocolate:
- Theobromine: Primary toxic compound, metabolized slowly by pets
- Caffeine: Secondary toxic compound, similar effects to theobromine
Chocolate Types by Toxicity (highest to lowest):
- Cocoa powder and baking chocolate (most toxic)
- Dark chocolate/semi-sweet chocolate
- Milk chocolate
- White chocolate (minimal theobromine)
Clinical Signs of Chocolate Toxicity:
- Mild (20-40 mg/kg): Vomiting, diarrhea, hyperactivity, increased thirst
- Moderate (40-60 mg/kg): Tachycardia, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias
- Severe (>60 mg/kg): Tremors, seizures, hyperthermia, respiratory failure, death
Treatment Guidelines:
- Decontamination: Induce vomiting if ingestion was recent (within 1-2 hours) and pet is asymptomatic
- Activated charcoal: May be administered to reduce absorption
- Supportive care: IV fluids, anti-seizure medication, cardiac monitoring
- Hospitalization: May be required for 24-72 hours depending on severity
Important Note:
This calculator provides an estimate of toxicity risk. Always contact your veterinarian or animal poison control immediately if your pet has consumed chocolate, regardless of the calculated risk level.
