Warning
CAUTION: Lidocaine should be used with extreme caution in cats. IV lidocaine is generally not recommended in cats due to high risk of toxicity.
Information
Lidocaine is a Class IB antiarrhythmic and local anesthetic. For IV administration, use preservative-free formulations.
Slow IV bolus, may repeat to max total dose of 8 mg/kg

Indications:
- Ventricular arrhythmias
- Local anesthesia
- Regional nerve blocks
- Epidural anesthesia
Concentration Guide:
- 2% = 20 mg/ml
- 1% = 10 mg/ml
- 0.5% = 5 mg/ml
- 0.2% = 2 mg/ml
Precautions:
- Signs of toxicity include seizures, vomiting, hypotension, and cardiac depression
- Use with caution in patients with liver disease, heart block, or heart failure
- For CRI, dilute to appropriate concentration and use an infusion pump
- Epinephrine-containing formulations should not be used IV
- Cats are extremely sensitive to lidocaine toxicity - avoid IV use if possible
